I ran into an old friend today.
We caught up, shared updates on our kids and talked about running, swimming and fitness and lamented on a couple of our recent sport related injuries. Conversation lead to my friend suggesting me to join their open water swimming crew and I suggested she rethink distance running and join in my long runs. Although being in open water scares me, and distance running revives chronic plantar fastidious, one common thread remained true. We both agreed our activities of choice without fail bring a certain 'high' or a feeling of nothingness or euphoria. Although distance swimming in open water (or even a pool for that matter consistently never fails to give me mild panic attack and for her running is as dull and painful as ever our common belief looks like this.
The best exercise, sport or activity is one that while participating gives each time without fail a euphoric feeling that allows our thoughts to drift off and to be completely present in the action, movement and moment. It is this point, where this particular activity gives the body the exercise and nourishment it needs to attain its best health possible, be it strength building, weight loss or cardiovascular tuning. We both agreed this state is meditative, can be very cathartic and completely freeing, consequently the most positively impactful on our fitness and weight management.
In today's busy fitness and weight loss marketplace we are overwhelmed with countless options; barre, spin, rowing, pilates, yoga, Zumba, TRX, boxing, Circuit training options, traditional aerobic classes, personal trainers and of course participation in sport. I feel with the myriad of fitness and weight loss options and persuasive trends it can be difficult to decipher the clearest path to weight loss and success in weight maintenance. As well being mindful of trends and quick fixes to a lifetime investment, your body and mind.
Like meditation, fitness is personal. I challenge YOU to find that activity where nothingness occurs, and a high (in my and my friend's case a runner and swimmer high) is experienced. It just might be a single sport, exercise or activity that is the catalyst for weight loss, or finally attaining the body of your dreams.
